NEW ISO 50001:2018 Standard

Energized! The New ISO 50001:2018 Standard
The Energy performance of a company is determined by its energy consumption, energy efficiency and energy use. The establishment of systems and processes for continual energy performance improvement within the organization is essential in terms of cost and resource efficiency.

Energy Management Systems (EnMS) are regulated by the standard ISO 50001 on an international basis. Implementing an EnMS based on these guidelines will help to anchor energy efficiency in relevant processes of business by determining energy policies, objectives, energy targets and action plans.
The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) federation published a technically revised version of the previous edition from 2011, on 21st August 2018.

Many benefits are associated with the improved and updated EnMS ISO 50001:2018:

  • Importance of top management
In order to implement systematic, data-driven and fact-based processes for energy performance improvement, commitment from all levels - but especially from the top management level - of the organization is essential.
  • Introduction of the high-level structure
Another highlight is the easy compatibility with other management systems, as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, due to the use of the high-level structure.
  • Integration with strategic management processes
With focus on trends, competitiveness, risk analysis and strategic business tasks.
  • Clarification of terms and definitions
Advanced usability due to a clear document language and structure.
  • Advancement of indicators
Improved presentation of increasing energy efficiency with focus on measurability of EnMS.

Although the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) determined a transition period of three years from the date of publication (21 August 2021) for companies, certification organizations are obliged to conduct audits according to the new standard within 18 months (21 February 2020) from the date of publication. Therefore, it is important to be informed about the changes in the EnMS ISO 50001:2018 and to plan the adjustment precociously.
